Today, we’re going to be taking a look at an authentic burrito sauce recipe. Alongside an authentic recipe, we’ll be looking at a slightly more modern sauce recipe too; one of my favorites – the creamy chipotle sauce. Both go perfectly with burritos and make an already incredible dish, even tastier. Burritos are one of my go-to Mexican dishes; mainly because they’re so quick and easy to make. But how do you go about making an authentic burrito sauce recipe? Let’s take a closer look.
What Is Burrito Sauce?
You may call it burrito sauce, but its traditional name is enchilada sauce. Enchiladas and burritos are very similar dishes, and the sauce poured over the dishes is the same for both. Enchilada (or burrito sauce) is typically made with a range of herbs, spices, and chili peppers. It usually has a good amount of heat and is very tasty.
Burritos that are made with these sauces are called burritos mojados. Mojado translates to “wet” in Spanish; so they are essentially “wet burritos”.

What Is Mexican Red Sauce Made Of?
Mexican red sauce is typically made using chili peppers and a mixture of herbs and spices. It gets its red coloring from the use of red chili peppers. Whereas Mexican green sauce gets its green coloring from green chili peppers. Both work well when it comes to wet burritos, but the red sauce has always been a favorite of mine.

Recipe – Authentic Burrito Sauce Recipe
Step 1: Prepare The Sauce
Add your flour, chili powder, cumin, salt, cinnamon, garlic powder, and oregano to a bowl. In the meantime, add your oil to a pot over medium heat. Once the oil is hot, add the prepared bowl of dry ingredients. Stir continuously whilst cooking, for around one minute. Now add your tomato paste, along with the broth. Continue to stir throughout the process.
Step 2: Simmer
Turn up the heat and wait until the mixture begins to simmer. Once it’s a gentle simmer, cook for around 6 minutes, until the sauce has thickened (bear in mind that the sauce will also become thicker once removed from heat). Whisk often throughout this process. Once you’ve reached the desired consistency, remove from heat.
Step 3: Adjust
After removing from heat, add the vinegar and a sprinkle of black pepper. Add more seasoning, if desired. Your sauce is ready to enjoy!

What Sauce Goes On Top Of Burritos?
Traditionally, red or green enchilada sauce is poured on top of burritos to make “wet burritos”. But nowadays, another popular choice is creamy chipotle sauce or taco sauce.
