Where Did Chilaquiles Originate?

Chilaquiles is a common breakfast dish in Mexico consisting of fried corn tortillas dipped in salsa and topped with scrambled eggs, cheese, avocado, or another type of meat. The dish may have originated as far back as the early 1900s when it was created by American expats living near Toluca Lake while they were experimenting with Mexican dishes. They named this new creation “chili” after their native country because it resembled chili con carne which had been popularized in the United States since at least 1885.
