Whether you like a sharp onion taste, or a slightly sweet taste when it comes to onions – there’s an onion for everyone! Onions are an important ingredient in many dishes; one of them being fajitas. But what is the best onion for fajitas? Let’s take a closer look.

What Is White Onion?

White onion has quite a mild flavor, and is quite light in comparison to other types of onion. They have quite a short shelf life; this is because they are high in sugar and low in sulphur. White onions are most often used in Mexican dishes for their versatility.

What Is Yellow Onion?

The yellow onion (sometimes known as the brown onion) is the strongest flavor of the three onions we’re looking at. It can look white inside, or sometimes have a greenish tinge. It’s higher in sulphur, which is why this particular type of onion has a much stronger, eye-watering flavor.

What Is Red Onion?

If you’re looking for a mild, sweet onion that is perfect for caramelizing and adding sweetness to your dishes, the red onion is the best choice for you. It usually has a purple skin and is commonly used in cooking, but the skin is so vibrant, that it’s also used as a dye.

What Kind Of Onion For Fajitas?

When it comes to fajitas, you can use any type of onion. I’ve found that white, yellow and red onions all work well when it comes to fajitas. It just depends on the intensity of flavor you want from your onions. I prefer red onions because they’re sweeter, and counteract the heat. However, red onions aren’t common in Mexican cooking, as they’re not as powerful in flavor like white or yellow onions.

White Or Yellow Onion For Fajitas?

There isn’t too much difference when it comes to white or yellow onions. White onions are most often used in Mexican cuisine. This is because they have the strongest flavor, and they’re the most crisp. If you’re looking to add intense flavor into your fajitas, white onion is the onion to choose.

To put it simply, white onions have a “kick” and are the strongest in flavor. Yellow onions are not quite as strong, but still have a good flavor. Red onions are sweeter and add color to any dish you’re making. Red onions are not typically used in traditional Mexican cooking.
